Alongside the Festival of Science (13-15 May) and the national conference on Bio-diversity (10-11 May), a public debate will be held on Wednesday 12 May at 8.30pm at the Majestic.

On the theme: "What Kind of International Recognition for the Mont Blanc Region", the debate will enable us to feed into the reflections on the future of Mont Blanc, a symbolic region which is very concerned about the importance of biodiversity and the problems of governance connected with it.

The Mayors of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and Courmayeur have been able to seize the opportunity to organise this debate. Elected officials, scientists, commercial organisations, charitable organisations and representatives of the administrations will be able to reflect together on the tools which must be put in place in this specific area, taking into account its cross-border situation.

We know that the year 2010 is the year of biodiversity. For the 20th Festival of Science in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, the commune and all the organisers have chosen to work on this theme.

The Chamonix Festival of Science offers to a very broad audience ( children, adults and students) meetings / debates, practical and hands-on experiences, games and competitions, science and art shows, plus outings: themed trails, glaciology, culture and heritage...

Present this year will be Gilles Boeuf ( President of the National Natural history museum), Jacques Weber of Cirad (agricultural research), Jacques Cluzaud (co-producer of « Océans « ), Marie Odile Guth ( "ecological network", alpine convention), Pierre-Henri Gouyon ( biologist, museum professor )...

To mark the year of biodiversity ,the ministry for Sustainable Development has, as of January 2010, launched a range of measures to improve the awareness of French people. A dedicated portal: -www.biodiversite2010.fr, short programmes on France Télévision - the " heroes of biodiversity", a big quiz on biodiversity with channel F1 and locally advertised events throughout France.

2010 is the occasion to rethink how to value living things in the development projects of our society. The ministry is mobilising all its partners by organising the French conference on biodiversity on 10th, 11th and 12th May at the exceptional site of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. This meeting, which precedes the 20th Festival of Science, the Earth and Man, gives the opportunity to take the first steps in a new programme of action on biodiversity.
